Winter Field Day 2012

Frontenac Radio group will be taking part in the SPAR Winter Field Day.

This is the sixth year SPAR has sponsored this event. The 2012 Winter Field Day will be held from 1700 UTC (12:00 noon EST) Saturday January 28, 2012 through 1700 UTC (12:00 noon EST) Sunday January 29, 2012.

The object of the event is familiar to most Amateur Radio operators: set up emergency-style communications and make as many contacts as possible during the 24 hour period. The rules encourage as many contacts on as many bands and modes as possible, because during a real emergency, the most important factor is the ability to communicate, regardless of band, mode or distance.

The official rules can be found at the SPAR web site. The event is open to all amateurs.

Hope to work you guys on the bands!

2 Meter Challenge - 2011

This contest is sponsored by the Frontenac Radio Group. The purpose of this contest is to encourage amateurs to learn the basics of simplex operations, expand the scope of their VHF operating techniques beyond that needed for repeater operation, and VHF contesting using all modes,. It is open to all amateurs, the object being to make as many two-way QSO’s with as many different hams, in as many different municipalities as possible, all within a 6 hour time period.

Please remember, this is a fun contest. All participants are encouraged to send in their logs, even if they make only a few contacts. It is not necessary to have a big “contest station” to participate. This contest can easily be worked with only a 2 meter handheld.

RULES:

1.  This event is 6 hours long, from 1000L – 1600L, on Sunday September 25th, 2011.

2. Repeater contacts for points are not allowed.

3. CQ Call – “CQ 2 Meter Challenge”

4. All stations (Fixed or Mobile) can only transmit on one radio at a time. Multiple operators in a team, using the same call sign, cannot use more than one radio at a time, or transmit from different locations, using the same call sign. For Example – if several operators want to use a club call sign, they must designate a single power level and location, just like any single operator.

6. All stations are either “Fixed” or “Mobile”. Stations cannot make contacts as both Mobile and Fixed. For Example – If you are mobile, you cannot go home and use that same call sign and run the rest of the contest as a fixed station. If you are a fixed operator, you can operate only from one municipality or location.

7. Operators must use the same power level for the duration of the contest.

8. Contest essentially follows the ARRL VHF Contest Rules and the Canadian VHF band plan.

9. Suggested FM frequencies: 146.475, 146.490, 146.505, 146.550, 146.565, 146.580, 147.420, 147.435, 147.450, 147.465, 147.480, 147.495, 147.510, 147.525, 147.540, 147.555, and 147.570.

Note: Frequencies that have a potential conflict with repeater inputs (low end of 146 simplex) and the National Calling Frequency have been omitted.

10. CW contacts should be made between 144.100 and 144.200.

11. Digital contacts should be made between 144.300 to 144.500, 145.590 to 145.790 and 147.435 to 147.585.

12. SSB contacts should be made between 144.200 and 144.275.

13. No contacts to be made on 146.520 – the National Calling Frequency.

14. Share the frequencies; we will not be the only operators using them!

15. Exchange – There are 3 exchange items: Your call sign, the name of your municipality, and your Power level.

16. Power levels are defined as follows: Low power – 5 watts or less. Medium power – greater than 5 watts, but less than 50 watts. High power – greater than 50 watts.

17. Entry Categories – There are two entry categories: Fixed and Mobile. You may enter only one category for the contest. If a station gives out more than one multiplier during the contest, that station will automatically be entered into the mobile category. A. A “Fixed” station or “Fixed” location means that a participant must operate the entire duration of the contest from one specific location. This category would also include setting up a temporary, portable station at a remote location, “Field Day” style. B. A Mobile / Rover station – a participant operates from a vehicle, with the option of activating more than one multiplier during the duration of the contest. Mobile stations must submit separate log sheets for each location they are operating from.

18. Scoring – each station you work is worth ONE (1) point. A. A station can be worked only once per mode, (unless it is mobile). A mobile station may be worked more than once only if it moves to a different municipality. B. Multipliers – After you add up your score, you can get extra bonus multipliers. For every municipality you contact, multiply your score times that number.

19. Awards – Certificates will be awarded to the top scoring entrant in each category and power level, as well as overall. A. The categories are as follows: Fixed – Low power Fixed – Medium power Fixed – High power Mobile – Low power Mobile – Medium power Mobile – High power Overall

20. Modes – Allowable modes are: FM, SSB, CW, and Digital all modes can be worked by a station during the contest.

All entries must be submitted on an official log sheet. Logs must be received by 30th October, 2011. If the judge cannot read your writing, it will not count. Log sheets are attached. Questions concerning the 2011 Two Meter Challenge should be addressed to VE3FRG "at" gmail.com

The Contest Committee of the Frontenac Radio Group will make any decisions concerning Rules interpretation or contest submissions and the decisions of the Committee will be final. Send you completed log to: Frontenac Radio Group, 1081 Regatta Court, Kingston, ON K7M 8R2

International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend

This past Sunday, August 21st, we activated two lighthouses as our last big project of what has been a busy summer for us. The first Lighthouse was Nine Mile Point on Simcoe Island - CA-0031. This is the second year in a row we have activated both Simcoe Island and Nine Mile Point Lighthouse.

The weather was pretty bad when we met at The Star Diner on Princess Street for breakfast (as we do every Sunday morning at 0730), lots of thunder, lightening and the rain was coming down by the bucket load.

George VE3SIQ, Dave VA3ORP, Martin VA3AKY, and Dave VE3DZE drove over to Simcoe Island via Wolfe Island and taking two ferries. The Simcoe Island ferry is an interesting ride. It's a three car capacity cable ferry, and it's a pretty smooth operation.  The ferry runs until the ice gets too thick for it, and then they use the slips at each end to drive vehicles over the ice.

Once at the lighthouse they asked for, and received permission to operate right by the lighthouse.  It's a beautiful spot, right at the entrance to the St. Lawrence Seaway

The group operated three stations, all using the groups VE3FRG callsign.  One on 40m, another on 20m, and the third was a VHF station on both 2m and 6m.

Unfortunately we could not establish a link between the other half of our group who where set up at at the second lighthouse we were activating, Point Petre Lighthouse - CA-0026 , 59 Kms away at the South-West tip of Prince Edward County.  We had hoped to set up a 6m and/or a 2m link with them.

We made a good number of contacts, including a couple of lighthouses in the USA.  Band conditions were OK, but lots of QSB on 20m which made things a bit difficult for us.

We did hear VE3FCT at the Point Petre Lighthouse a couple of times on HF, but they never heard us.

All in all it was a good activation, and we had a good workout for our portable radios and antenna systems.  It's a shame the weather didn't cooperate a bit better, but we managed to work around it.  I guess you can't have perfect weather all the time !

Many thanks to the families who live at Nine Mile Point Lighthouse for allowing us to interupt their normal quiet Sunday morning.  We greatly appreciated their kindness in allowing us onto their private property.
